What's the difference between education and training?

Our experience over the last twenty-odd years has taught us that there is a significant difference between education and training. We have helped literally thousands of adults learn and understand what they can do to make their companies successful.


Along the way, we’ve discovered that only happens when people become engaged in, and ultimately own, their work processes. Only then are people ready to embrace change, learn to become creative, and manage their own work environments. Education vs. Training


Education must clearly define what you want people to do. In addition, education must also make a strong case for why people must do it. Schenck Business Solutions uses Lean Enterprise Learning Events to address these educational issues.


Training must clearly define how the chosen improvement methodology works. For adults, this means some understanding of the principal techniques involved, and examples of how those techniques have been applied by other people at companies in different industries. Why both?


Many programs address training only. However, we've found that if the “what” and “why” issues are not addressed, then people do not understand the “how” training and, in many cases, reject it out-of-hand. On the other hand, the education step alone does not create a bias for action. Having Training without Education, or vice versa, are two of the major reasons for the failure of so many business improvement initiatives.
